The North Bennet Street School, Preservation Carpentry Class of 2017 removed five layers of asphalt singles, replaced a few rotted sheathing boards, and repaired a rafter before the new cedar shake roof was installed. We removed as many nails from the sheathing boards as we could before laying the tar paper. We screwed both vertical and horizontal strapping down to allow for maximum ventilation. Lastly nailed the shakes down, and finished with custom folded copper flashing around the chimney.
