Sherborn Barn
Apple Cider House
circa 1796
Sherborn, MA
North Bennet Street School Preservation Carpentry Class of 2017 arrived on site at the Barber Reservation in Sherborn, MA to begin the preservation of a 1796 timber frame structure.
The first order of business was to stabilize the barn. In order to access the condition of the sills, we jacked up the building and braced it. That allowed us to remove the rotting wood and replace it with dutchman. We worked our way through the building, replacing portions of the plates, tie beams and rafters. After the structural repair was complete, we closed up the building with board and batten and laid the sub floor. We built new barn doors to replicate the originals. Back in the shop, we fabricated new custom window sash using the Williams and Hussey molding planer to fit the original openings in the barn. Lastly a fresh coat of paint completed the three month preservation project!
