Originally located in Lynn, Massachusetts, the wooden building, circa 1830, was the workplace for several shoe makers who made shoes entirely by hand in the pre-industrial era.

The North Bennet Street School, Preservation Carpentry Class of 2017 removed the windows from the shoe shop, secured the building, and began restoration. Using proper RRP standards (steaming, scraping, and chemicals) we removed the existing glazing and window lights. Once down to the bare wood, we labeled each piece: upper and lower rail, left and right stiles, and muntins. Removed the pins and disassembled the sash. After assessing the condition of the wood we made dutchman where necessary and filled smaller cracks with a two part epoxy. Next we cut the glass to size and learned repaired a few broken pieces. We completed this project by glazing and painting the windows before reinstalling them.
